WPPI: What made you first decide you were going to be a photographer?
Ky Luu: Photography is not only a career to me; it is my passion. I remember the first time I picked up a camera, my first photographs were blurry or in odd composition, yet, I was captivated by the artistic potential. That one picture could be translated in so many different ways simply by changing the lighting, the angle or the color. That one picture could describe and express better than my words ever could. Photography is the only language that can be communicated worldwide. Photography was a window to my ancestors and a reflection of time elapsed. Photography captured me. So as it was, B Captured was born.
WPPI: What do you primarily photograph?
KL: Weddings are my main focus but family photos are becoming a major part of my portfolio as well these days.
WPPI: What is your favorite lens to shoot with?
KL: I really love the Nikon 14-24mm, F/2.8 because of the dramatic and extravagant feel that it creates.
WPPI: Do you still shoot with film?
KL: No, I shoot fully in digital.
WPPI: Who are your greatest influences in the art world?
KL: Photography is an art and inspiration for that art is everywhere. I’m inspired by people, cultures and nature. I’m also inspired by love and laughter and sentiment. However, my greatest influence is Leonardo da Vinci, especially one of his most famous pieces, “The Last Supper,” which inspired my love for taking bridal party photos.
WPPI: Do you do anything before a shoot to prepare yourself?
KL: Besides doing the obvious in making sure all my equipment has been thoroughly checked, I usually like to watch a movie before each shoot. Movies give me inspiration through their compositions, lighting and emotions.
